My 2019 Reading List

Books I Read in 2019

The last, few years since I became an entrepreneur have been wonderful in many ways, but my reading has certainly tapered off, which I don’t like. When I had a long commute, I could easily get through audiobooks in the car, but I’ve had to be a lot more intentional since working from home.

In 2019, I wanted to recommit to reading more, and that meant Kindle. Believe it or not, I don’t actually love to read. I love to learn, and that’s why Audible was so important to me. It made it so much easier to read books while driving—and there’s a lot of that here in Atlanta.

However, if I wanted to read more last year, it meant I’d have to re-commit to Kindle. I’ve tried to get into the habit of reading about a chapter per night, which has been good for my bedtime routine. Overall, I’ve enjoyed it more than I thought I would, and am even giving Kindle Unlimited a try.

I didn’t really increase the number of books I read much from my total count in 2018, but I’m making progress. I think 2020 will be a good year for reading, though!

“Leaders are readers” and “leaders are learners” are two messages that have been instilled in me over the years, and I know reading also makes me a better writer. So, as much as I enjoy podcasts, I want to make sure reading stays on my radar. And that means being thoughtful about it.

Of course, it’s never as much about the quantity of books as it is the quality. Luckily, I found some terrific options. Take a look for yourself . . .

Hey, everyone –

Just wanted to quickly tell you about a cool offer from my friend, Jen Gordon, of The Hope Deck.

A couple of years ago, before I met her, Jen went through some really difficult circumstances in her life, but was blessed enough to have a group of good friends to see her through it. Later, one of these friends challenged her to make something good from all of this mess.

She’s a graphic designer, so she created The Hope Deck as a thank you gift for these friends. It’s a beautiful set of cards with a different Bible verse on each one. In fact, those friends selected the scriptures that were used.

She kept getting more requests for The Hope Deck, so now she’s making them commercially. She’s almost out of the original run, so she launched a Kickstarter a couple of weeks ago to get more printed. This second run will be enough to start selling them in stores, through affiliates online, and things like that.

Typically, a Hope Deck is $23, but for the next three days you can get two for $24. And they are super nice quality!

I’ve enjoyed having mine, and thought some of you might be interested as well. You can use them yourself as prayer cards, postcards, recipe cards, reminders, decor, and things like that. Or you can buy a bunch to keep on hand for gifts. Due to the nature of the cards, they work for pretty much any occasion!

I’m really proud of Jen, and am praying this is a successful campaign. Please join me in supporting her!

ONLY THREE DAYS LEFT!

Oceans

Hillsong_OceansI’ve heard the song before, but ever since IF:Gathering a few weeks ago, I just can’t get the song “Oceans” out of my head.

The phrase that really caught my attention and has had my heart is: Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders.” Beautiful.

I’ve been meditating on this phrase, as well as this song, over and over again since my trip. I’m loving it.

Here are the lyrics and video if you aren’t familiar with it:

“Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)”

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
In oceans deep
My faith will stand

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Your grace abounds in deepest waters
Your sovereign hand
Will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You’ve never failed and You won’t start now

So I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

 [6x]
Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

Oh, Jesus, you’re my God!

I will call upon Your name
Keep my eyes above the waves
My soul will rest in Your embrace
I am Yours and You are mine

That’s it. That’s all I’ve got right now for you. Just wanted to share. 🙂

What’s been resonating with you?

The Way I’m Feeling

Screen Shot 2015-03-21 at 11.48.02 AMI love John Mayer. I love the sound of his music, and especially his lyrics (Mostly—see “Your Body is a Wonderland” for otherwise). I’m a word person. And sometimes he just hits the nail on the head with his own blend of phrasing and rhythm.

When I first heard “Bigger Than My Body” I felt like words had been put to my own thoughts and feelings. After a little research, I read that he wrote it at a Coldplay concert, trying to express that he wanted to make music that moved people the way his favorite artists did. For me, it articulates those times when I have so many thoughts, feelings, passions, pursuits, interests . . . and am overwhelmed by them all. It gives perfect voice to my frustration that I am limited by my skin and time and resources and capabilities. It’s the phrase I always use to denote my inability to do everything I want to do.

I had another moment like that this week. In fact, I have them fairly regularly. But I thought of this song, and took comfort in the fact that I’m not alone. There are a lot of us who are trying to make this dusty rock we live on a better place.  And despite heartaches and setbacks and maybe even a few failures, we’ll get there. Because we just won’t settle for anything less.

So, for all my fellow dreamers and doers out there, this one’s for you too.

“Bigger Than My Body”

This is a call to the color-blind
This is an IOU
I’m stranded behind a horizon line
Tied up in something trueYes, I’m grounded
Got my wings clipped
I’m surrounded (by)
All this pavement
Guess I’ll circle
While I’m waiting
For my fuse to dry

Someday I’ll fly
Someday I’ll soar
Someday I’ll be so damn much more
Cause I’m bigger than my body gives me credit for

Why is it not my time?
What is there more to learn?
Shed this skin I’ve been tripping in
Never to quite return

Yes, I’m grounded
Got my wings clipped
I’m surrounded (by)
All this pavement
Guess I’ll circle
While I’m waiting
For my fuse to dry

Someday I’ll fly
Someday I’ll soar
Someday I’ll be so damn much more
Cause I’m bigger than my body gives me credit for
Cause I’m bigger than my body now

Maybe I’ll tangle in the power lines
And it might be over in a second’s time
But I’ll gladly go down in a flame
If the flame’s what it takes to remember my name

Yes, I’m grounded
Got my wings clipped
I’m surrounded (by)
All this pavement
Guess I’ll circle
While I’m waiting
For my fuse to dry
For my fuse to dry

Someday I’ll fly
Someday I’ll soar
Someday I’ll be so damn much more
Cause I’m bigger than my body
I’m bigger than my body
I’m bigger than my body now
